National Museum of Cambodia: A Treasure of Khmer Heritage
The National Museum of Cambodia

No trip to Phnom Penh is complete without visiting the National Museum of Cambodia. Located in the heart of the capital, this prestigious institution stands as the country's foremost historical and archaeological museum. I recently returned to explore its latest exhibition featuring 14 cultural artifacts that were repatriated from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in July 2024 after being looted from Cambodia decades ago.

Inaugurated in 1920 during the French colonial period, the building itself is a masterpiece of traditional Khmer architecture. Its distinctive red terracotta exterior and elegant courtyard, complete with tropical gardens and reflecting pools, create a serene atmosphere that complements the treasures housed within.

Beyond being a tourist attraction, the National Museum plays a crucial role in preserving Cambodia's cultural heritage and educating both locals and visitors about the country's rich artistic history. It serves as a center for conservation, research, and education, helping to reconnect Cambodians with their cultural past following the devastation of the Khmer Rouge period. The museum continues to work with international partners on repatriation efforts to return Khmer artifacts that were looted or removed from the country during periods of conflict.
